Jawara left good legacy - Gambia’s Information Minister

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Ebrima Sillah, Gambia's Information Minister, on Tuesday singled out respect for human rights and rule of law as some of the good legacies of Gambia's former President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, who passed away earlier in the day. According to him, following the passing of Sir Dawda on Tuesday (August 27th), President Adama Barrow's government was duly informed by the first President's family and consultations are ongoing for the members of the current government to visit the Jawara Family and express condolences. Coming back to another Jawara legacy, Sillah remarked "Putting in place strong government institutions is part of Sir Dawda's good legacy. At the time of independence, Gambia was referred to as a probable nation as doubts were raised if the tiny country could survive as a nation. Sillah went on to describe Jawara as a very charismatic and eloquent leader who took his time when dealing with issues. He said Jawara worked with the media and tried to control the narratives in a very mature and responsible manner. "Jawara was a very careful man in his utterances in both public and private," the Minister's recalled. -0- PANA MLJ/VAO 27Aug2019
