Jammeh's victims petition Gambian President

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Victims of human rights violations committed under former Gambian dictator, Yahya Jammeh's watch, on Friday petitioned President Adama Barrow, urging him to reverse his decision of appointing Jammeh's party's bigwigs as parliamentary leaders.

President Barrow recently named Fabakary Tombong Jatta as Gambian Speaker of parliament and Seedy Njie as deputy speaker much to the disappointment and dismay of Jammeh-era victims who regarded the two men as the dictator's enablers.

Scores of victims, under the banner of "The Victims Center of Human Rights Violations of the Gambia", voiced out the petition letter to the media during a press conference held in Serre Kunda, Gambia's largest town.

The victims, having sent the protest letter to President Barrow already and copied to United Nations agencies/offices, and diplomatic missions also shared it with the media.

Sheriff Mohammed Kijera, Chairman, Board of Directors of the Victim Center, read out the protest letter to journalists decrying the move to nominate the two men in Gambian parliament.

"We are hugely concerned with your nomination of these two individuals as they do not only represent the brutal dictatorship that Gambia endured for 22 years," Mr. Kijera reminded President Barrow.

"But the two men were also key pillars of the power behind the tyranny of former President Jammeh," he added.
