Grandson of 'Architect of Apartheid' secures seat South African Parliament

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Following last week’s national elections, the grandson of the so-called “Architect of Apartheid” has secured a seat in Parliament where he will seat just metres away from the spot where Hendrik Verwoerd was assassinated in 1966.

PANA reports that Wynand Boshoff who is the grandson of Verwoerd, will represent the Freedom Front Plus which secured more than 250,000 votes and finished in fourth place.

The party will now have 10 MPs in the National Assembly, as well as two representatives in the National Council of Provinces and has representatives in eight of the nine provinces.

Boshoff is the son of Carel Boshoff, the founder of the infamous whites only enclave in the Northern Cape. Its most famous resident was Verwoerd’s widow Betsie who made global headlines when she invited Nelson Mandela into her home for tea during his presidency in the 1990s.

Hendrik Verwoerd is widely regarded as the National Party Prime Minister who implemented the hated apartheid policy. Born in the Netherlands, he remains South Africa's only foreign-born leader.

In 1961, he proclaimed the founding of the Republic of South Africa, and continued as its Prime Minister from 1961 until his assassination in Parliament in 1966 by Dimitri Tsafendas.
