Ghassan Salamé informs Russian Middle-East envoy on outcomes of meeting of 5+5 military council

Tripoli, Libya (PANA)   -  The representative of the UN Secretary general in Libya, Ghassan Salamé, Wednesday briefed the special envoy of the Russian president in the Middle-East, Mikhail Bogdanov, on the outcome of the first meeting of the joint 5+5 military council in Geneva.

That meeting brought together representatives of the government of national accord and the general commandment of the Libyan national army commanded by Marshall Khalifa Haftar to end the fighting in Tripoli.

Bogdanov discussed with Salamé the modalities for the resolution of the Libyan conflict and the outcome of the 5+5 military committee, according to a statement issued by the Russian ministry of foreign affairs.

They discussed the international efforts aiming at an urgent resolution of the Libyan crisis, taking into consideration results from the international Berlin conference held on 19 January and the ongoing talks at the UN Security Council.

The meetings of the 5+5 military committee began on Monday under the aegis of the United Nations in Geneva with the participation of five senior army officers representing the government of national accord and five senior officers representing the Libyan national army, according to a communiqué of the UN mission.

Salamé said the deployment of the European mission for the surveillance of the ceasefire in Libya was a decision “which only the Libyans can make”.

At a news conference on Tuesday in Geneva after the beginning of negotiations on the military security aspect between the two parties in conflict in Libya, Salamé said the issue of the European observation mission would be raised in the course of the week.

The special representative of the UN Secretary General in Libya said that the representatives of the warring parties in Libya agreed on the need to transform the truce into a permanent ceasefire.

He underlined that "the goal of those talks in Geneva is to listen attentively to the position of the two parties concerning their conditions to accept the transformation of that armistice into permanent and lasting ceasefire".
