Gambian President Jammeh takes early lead in poll

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has jumped into the lead in the first results declared by the electoral commission after Thursday's presidential election held in the West African country.

According to the results from the Central River Region announced by the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Mustapha L. Carayol, President Jammeh polled 1,446 votes while Ousainou Darboe had 202 and Hamat Bah obtained 54.

Carayol said results from 1,302 more polling stations are yet to be declared.

In the last election in 2006 President Jammeh defeated the opposition in that region.
