Gambia’s new VP, Ministers take oath

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) – Gambia’s new Vice President, Dr. Isatou Touray, along with newly-appointed cabinet ministers and top senior government officials on Thursday took oath of office at State House in Banjul following their appointment after a cabinet reshuffle.

The two newly-hired ministers who took oath of office and secrecy are Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, until his appointment was the Chief Medical Director of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, and Mrs. Amie Fabureh, the new Minister of Agriculture, aged 49, has been working at the Ministry of Agriculture for over three decades.

For the Vice President, Cabinet Ministers and Permanent Secretaries who have just been sworn in, I congratulate you heartily on your appointments, and I thank you for accepting to serve in my Government,” President Adama Barrow told the gathering at the swearing in ceremony.

“Your identification and appointments reflect the trust and confidence we have in you as respectable and dependable patriots of the country.

“It is my view too that your willingness to serve the nation as Vice President, Government Ministers and Permanent Secretaries indicates that you understand and appreciate the responsibilities and expectations attached to occupying such positions within the context of a democratic government in a democratic State,” the Gambian leader added.

Meanwhile, Barrow recently reshuffled his cabinet sacking several ministers that were mainly from the United Democratic Party (UDP) whose members seemingly have political differences with the President.

Many critics have accused Barrow of trying to go the Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorial way by hiring and firing government officials or on-loading/offloading cabinet members without any genuine reason or explanation.
