Gambia reduces price of bag of rice amid Japanese rice aid

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - The government of The Gambia has announced a reduction in price of the bag of rice from GMD 750 about (US$15) to GMD 450 (US$9) for a 30-kilograms bag of rice amid Japan donation of 115,956 bags of rice to The Gambia.

The Office of the President announced that the Japanese government has donated 115,956 bags of rice to The Gambia, indicating that the ship has docked at The Gambia Ports Authority. 

A statement, made available to PANA here on Monday, said that the Office of the President, in consultation with the Ministries of Agriculture and Finance and Economic Affairs, have decided to conduct the sale of the rice at the Ports.

“No single buyer will be allowed to purchase more than five thousand (5,000) bags. The price for a 30-kilograms bag of rice is pegged at 450 Dalasis only. 

Interested buyers are invited to contact the Accountant General's office, where they will be given an invoice and an account number to make all payments before collecting the rice,” the statement said.

The statement also said it has been agreed with the Japanese Government that the proceeds will be deposited in a special account at the Central Bank of The Gambia to support the government in its National Development Plan priority areas.

The public is informed that it is strictly forbidden to sell the rice outside The Gambia.
