Gambia marks 53 years of independence

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) – The Gambia on Sunday celebrated 53 years of its independence from British rule.

The celebration was marked with a march past by members of security forces, representatives from 110 schools, five voluntary organizations and regional athletics at McCarthy Square in Banjul, the country's capital.

Gambia gained independence on 18 February 1965 under the leadership of its first president, Dawda Jawara, who ruled the West African country until he was deposed in a military coup in 1994.
