Gambia gears up for bettter management of fish resources

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - Stakeholders in Gambia's fisheries sector are working out strategies to boost fishing in the West African state, official sources said on Wednesday.

They said Gambia's National Association of Artisanal Fisheries Operators in collaboration with Gambia Artisanal Fisheries Development Agency (GAMFIDA) on Wednesday concluded a two-day meeting with funding from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the West African Association for the Development of Artisanal Fisheries (WADAF) to develop fishing.

They are working on how to put together National Fish Landing Sites (NFLS) and a Sanitation task force for major fishing centres in the country.

One key issue which was high on the agenda was the setting up of task force committees which will be responsible for producing an effective and well-managed system of fish landing sites, environmental sanitation, as well as safeguarding the beaches.

The committees are also expected to be in charge of looking at the country's marine environment as well as conserve the habitats.
