GNA considers Abu Grein attack as extension of "brutal aggression" against Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord said the attack carried out on Friday by Haftar's forces against Abu Grein locality, east of Misrata (220 km east of Tripoli) "is an announcement of the extension of the cycle of brutal aggression to include all Libya".

In a statement released on Saturday, the Presidential Council said that "the Libyan army and support forces repelled the offensive and inflicted mass casualties on the attackers among the militias and mercenaries forced to withdraw and continue to wage the battle with courage and brilliance."

The Presidential Council has praised "the homeland martyrs who repelled aggression against the Abu Grein region", affirming the determination of the national accord forces to defend themselves, pledging to defeat the attackers.

A military offensive preceded by an air strike by forces of Marshal Khalifa Haftar against the troops of the government of national accord in Abu Grein, was repulsed by the army loyal to the Presidential Council.

Two rescuers were injured and an ambulance destroyed during a bombing that targeted a medical team at a rescue point in the region of Abu Grein, said the Ministry of Health of the government of national accord.

Military escalation has intensified in recent days in Libya, with continued shelling and missiles against residential areas of Tripoli while armed clashes have resumed on the southern outskirts of the city despite the multiplication of calls for a humanitarian truce to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
