G7 condemns Sudanese militia's atrocities in Darfur
Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The G7 Foreign Ministers have strongly condemned the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), accusing them of committing atrocities and often ethnically-motivated crimes, against unarmed civilians and aid workers, particularly in El Fasher and North Kordofan.
In a joint statement carried by the US Department of State on Wednesday at the end of their two-day meeting in Niagara, Canada, the ministers said: “We strongly condemned the recent escalation of violence and attacks that are often ethnically-motivated, by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against unarmed civilians and aid workers, particularly in El Fasher and North Kordofan.”
The ministers said that in their deliberation they deplored the devastating impact of the war on civilians including the famine that has led to the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
“We unequivocally condemn sexual violence. We urged the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to respect human rights, de-escalate, commit to an immediate and permanent ceasefire, and ensure rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian assistance.”
It added that the ministers expressed their support for diplomatic efforts underway to restore peace and security and called upon external actors to contribute to that end.
The Quad, comprisng the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, has called for a three-month humanitarian truce to enable the delivery of emergency aid to all areas as a step toward a permanent ceasefire.
The statement was released by the G7 Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America and the High Representative of the European Union.
Sudan’s civil war pits the SAF against the RSF – once allies who turned their weapons on each other in April 2023. Fighting has displaced more than ten million people, destroyed large parts of Khartoum and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan said in March that both sides were responsible for "a widespread pattern of arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment of detainees".
