G5 Sahel–France Summit: Burkinabe president Kabore in Nouakchott

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) – The Burkinabe president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, will Tuesday, 30 June, 2020, take part in a G5 Sahel-France Summit in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, according to a  communiqué issued by the Burkinabe presidency.

The Summit will take stock of the implementation of the action plan defined as common accord by the five (5) G5 Sahel heads of State and French president, Emmanuel Macron, at the Pau Summit held in France on 13 January 2020.

In Pau, the heads of State resolved to set up a coalition for Sahel and appealed to the other countries and partners to take part in it and back that coalition.

The Summit will also examine the evaluation of the situation in Sahel. The Summit of the Mauritanian capital is held in a context marked by the persistence of terrorist attacks in countries of the G5 Sahel space and the deterioration of the security situation in Libya, epicenter of terrorism in the Sahelo-Saharan strip, and the destabilization of Sahel countries.

The G5 Sahel states are also affected by the health crisis linked to the Covid19 pandemic with previsions of drop in growth and negative effects on economic and social life.

During their last extraordinary meeting of the Conference of G5 Sahel heads of State held through videoconferencing on 27 April 2020, the leaders of the organisation appealed for the cancellation of the foreign debt of G5 Sahel countries to help in the relaunch of their economy and support the resilience of populations.
