G5 Sahel to study security expenditure of member States

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – The G5 Sahel is to order a study into the security expenditure of member sates and its effects on the financing of investments, particularly within social sectors, the organisation’s Permanent Secretariat (PS) announced on Friday.

The data gathered will enable decision-makers to carry out a determination concerning the financing of development and security, which are the two dimensions of the fight against terrorism and radicalization.

In a bid to implement the project, a G5 Sahel Council of Ministers on 21 February 2019 held a meeting in Nouakchott to discuss details.

To carry this study, the G5 Sahel’s Permanent Secretariat has chosen the Sahel Institute of the Foundation for Studies and Research on International Development (FERDI) based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Defending the importance of the project, the PS noted that G5 Sahel member states have been making significant efforts to respond to the security crisis in the region.

However, the dimension of that mobilization remains unknown.

G5 Sahel is a sub-regional organisation set up in 2014 by Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad, aimed at fighting terrorism and insecurity, as well as the coordination of development actions.

That space covers 5 million square kilometers with a population of 80 million inhabitants and a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimated at US$53 billion.
