French President Emmanuel Macron attends G5 Sahel summit in Nouakchott

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) -  Mauritanian capital Nouakchott is hosting a G5 Sahel heads of state summit on Tuesday, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, official sources told PANA.

The G5 Sahel is a sub-regional organization dedicated to combating terrorism, insecurity and coordinating development efforts.

Its member countries are Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.

The Nouakchott meeting aims to take stock of the implementation of the commitments made at a summit in Pau, France, in January 2020, on intensifying the fight against Armed terrorist groups (ATGs) in the Sahel, and declaring the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) as enemy number 1.

The Nouakchott meeting will also provide an update on the implementation of development projects.

The summit comes amid growing political dissent in Mali, where a street, led by Imam Mahmoud Dicko, is demanding the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a new development that has added to the deteriorating security situation in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to a lesser extent.
