France welcomes ceasefire agreement between belligerents of Libyan crisis

Paris, France (PANA) - France Saturday welcomed the signing of a ceasefire agreement Friday in Geneva between the various protagonists of the crisis in Libya,

"This agreement marks an important step towards a sovereign, stable and united Libya, which involves the cessation of military operations, the departure of foreign mercenaries from Libyan territory, the dismantling of the militias, the union of all in the fight against terrorism and the cessation of violations of the arms embargo, in accordance with the principles agreed at the Berlin Conference and the discussions in Hurghada in Egypt,”

Agnès von der Mühll, communication and press Director, spokesperson for the Quai d'Orsay in a statement Friday.

The parties to the conflict in Libya signed a ceasefire agreement in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday under the auspices of the UN.

It was part of the meeting of the Military Commission joint 5 + 5 in Geneva between the military representatives of the Government of National Accord (GNA), recognized by the international community based in Tripoli, and the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Khalifa Haftar.

France “recalls its attachment to the process progressing in an inclusive manner, under the aegis of the United Nations, with a view to the rapid organization of elections on the basis of parameters agreed by the Libyans. Libya's neighbors should be fully involved in this process,” said Agnès von der Mühll, spokesperson for the Quai d'Orsay.

France, which congratulated the Libyan actors "for their sense of responsibility", praised the efforts of the United Nations support mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and welcomed the forthcoming holding of the inter-Libyan political dialogue in Tunisia.

The situation in Libya gradually deteriorated with the disappearance of Colonel Gaddafi in October 2011 and doubled in intensity with the deadly clashes between the troops of the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA) with a toll of over 1,000 dead and several hundred thousand displaced people.

The two protagonists are supported by third countries, particularly Turkey alongside the GNA on the one hand and Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Russia with the LNA, on the other hand.
