France recalls its ambassador to Burkina Faso for "consultation"

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - France on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Burkina Faso after the authorities in Ouagadougou asked Paris to replace him.

"In the context of the latest developments in Burkina Faso, we have decided to recall our ambassador to Paris, to consult on the state and prospects of our bilateral cooperation," French media quoted the Quai d'Orsay as saying.

Since last December, the Burkinabe authorities have been demanding the departure of Luc Hallade, French ambassador to Ouagadougou, since 2019, for "lack of trust".

Ouagadougou has also just asked France to withdraw within a month its special forces of the "sabre" operation stationed on Burkinabe soil.

On Tuesday, the French authorities said that, in accordance with the terms of the agreement, the denunciation takes effect one month after receipt of the written notification and that France will respect the terms of the agreement by following up on this request from Ouagadougou.

Since the arrival in power of Captain Ibrahim Traoré in September 2022, relations between Ouagadougou and Paris have deteriorated.
