France calls for international conference to resolve the Libyan crisis

Paris, France (PANA) – The French minister of foreign affairs, Jean Yves le Drian, on Thursday called for an international conference, after a durable ceasefire, to resolve the Libyan crisis.

"First, the truce must be able to result in durable ceasefire. The best way to move forward is to hold immediately an international conference that brings together all concerned stakeholders and regional actors and to move to an inter-Libyan conference," said the head of the French diplomacy at the closing ceremony of the Conference of ambassadors in Paris.

Mr Le Drain said that the global plan was conceived by the special representative of the United Nations, Ghassan Salame and is sustained largely by the African Union.

He explained that France cannot be simple spectators on the one hand as Europe is at the forefront of those crises which directly threaten its security interests.

On the other hand France has a responsibility to take action, particularly because it is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and also in the name of humanity.

Libya’s stabilisation is actually essential to contain the terrorist risk and to manage better the immigration challenges in the Mediterranean, he said.
