Former Ivorian president Gbagbo decides to form new political party

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo on Monday decided to establish a new political party after the judicial battle between him and Affi N'Guessan for the control of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), official sources said.

"Our only instrument of political fight is confiscated by Mr. Affi N’Guessan and despite the several initiatives to reason with him, he stuck to his so-called ’legality’," said the final statement released at the end of a meeting of his party.

The statement said Mr. Gbagbo took note of the will and obstinacy of Mr. N'Guessan "to take hostage the Ivorian Popular Front, with disregard to the years of sacrifice of the party’s militants and supporters".

Mr. Gbagbo is not considering engaging in a judicial battle with Mr. N'Guessan and proposed to the Central committee "the establishment of a new fighting instrument that conforms to our ideology and ambitions".

The statement added that Gbagbo called the central committee to authorize the establishment of a committee to prepare the constitutive congress.

"The central committee urged the militants, supporters and fans of the FPI and all supporters of President Laurent Gbagbo and Ivorian democrats to inspire to that common sense in a bid to work for the establishment of stable and prosperous Ivory Coast, in peace and stability."

The FPI was set up in 1982 and was under the control of Mr. Gbagbo from 1990 until 2011 when the Ivorian crisis broke out.

Mr. N'Guessan took control of the party when Mr. Gbagbo had judicial problems.

In 2015, Mr. N'Guessan was even candidate for the Ivorian presidency under the FPI when he was recognized by the Ivorian justice as leader of that political party.
