Former Gambian Minister eulogisses late President Jawara

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) – Omar A Jallow, former Gambian Minister of Agriculture, on Thursday eulogised the late Sir Dawda K. Jawara describing him as “one of the great sons” and leaders in Africa, the world and “champion of peace and human rights”.

Mr. Jallow came up with the eulogy as part of the funeral procession after the remains of the former President Jawara lay in state at Gambia’s National Assembly building complex followed by Moslem prayers and rituals at the King Fahad Central Mosque in Banjul.

According to Mr. Jallow, the late former President was a great leader who contributed to the maintenance of peace not only in the Gambia and Africa but also across the globe.

“Thank you Sir Dawda Jawara for unifying Gambians - making them a united front and a united family.”

Mr. Jallow also praised the good leadership role Jawara played towards mediation and maintenance of peace within the sub-region citing his mediation efforts between Cote d'Ivoire under President Felix Houphouet-Boigny and President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo.

Jallow also praised Sir Dawda for creating an enabling environment during his 29-year rule in the Gambia making the citizens stay at home and not seeing the need to embark on a perilous journey through Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

He described Jawara’s passing as a great loss to not only the Gambia but Africa and the world at large.
