First session of National Early Warning and Security Risk Response Mechanism opens in Bamako

Bamako, Mali (PANA)  -  The first session of the National Early Warning and Security Risk Response Mechanism opened here Tuesday, official sources told PANA.

The mechanism was set up in five member-states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), namely Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire , Guinea Bissau, Liberia and Mali.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Malian Prime Minister Boubou Cissé, who chaired proceedings, said the establishment of the Mechanism had contributed to strengthening the capacities of ECOWAS member-states in the prevention and management of crises related to human security.

"In the context of global threats and vulnerabilities that undermine human and state security, the Early Warning Mechanism is expected to play a leading role in peace and stability over time and in anticipation," added the Malian prime minister.

ECOWAS Commission Vice-President Finda Koroma said the Mechanism in member-states was legitimized by the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the  sub-regional organization held in July 2014, during which they adopted the framework for its implementation.

Mali was the first country to inaugurate its National Center on October 14, 2017, under the co-presidency of Faure Eyadema, President of Togo, current president of ECOWAS at the moment and Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, president of Mali, who was president of G5 Sahel at the time.
