FIFA fines Egypt's Kahraba US$2 million for unilaterally terminating contract with Zamalek
Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - Football governing body, FIFA, announced on Friday that it has fined Ahly FC winger, Mahmoud "Kahraba" Abdel-Moneim, for terminating his contract with Zamalek individually and joining Portuguese side CD Aves.
FIFA sent a letter to Zamalek’s management informing them of the result of the case they had lodged against the player, CD Aves and Ahly, confirming only that CD Aves is jointly and severally liable for the payment of the aforementioned compensation.
"The respondent 1, Mahmoud Abdelmonem Soliman (Kahraba), has to pay to the claimant the following amount: (Egyptian pound GP 32,837,175 ) as compensation for breach of contract without just cause plus 5% interest on said amount as from 6 January until the date of effective payment," FIFA said in the letter to Zamalek.
The 25-year-old, who joined CD Aves last summer, terminated his contract with the latter after agreeing to pay the release clause. He then joined Cairo giants Ahly on a free transfer.
Kahraba had sparked controversy after opting to unilaterally terminate his contract with Zamalek to move to Aves at the end of the season.
Zamalek lodged a complaint with FIFA against the player, the Portuguese club, and Ahly, asking for a compensation of US$9 million, but FIFA decided to fine the player US$2 million.
After FIFA's decision, Kahraba announced that he would appeal the fine and that he expects it would be waived.
