FIFA appoints top South African referees

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Several South Africans have been appointed to the 2020 FIFA Referees list, the South African Football Association (SAFA) announced on Thursday.

Seasoned assistant referee Zakhele Siwela leads the list of seven officials from South Africa. The others are Athenkosi Ndongeni, Emmanuel de Sani, Elphas Sitole, Kgara Mokoena, Khamusi Razwimsani and Shaun Olive.

In addition, three female referees, Akhona Makalima, Lindiwe Thwala and Euzen Mokoena have been appointed.

“The huge number of officials accepted into CAF and FIFA goes to show how the outside world rank and appreciate the good work by our officials both on the domestic front and during international assignments,” said Natasha Tsichlas, chair of SAFA Referees Committee.

South Africa enjoys strong ties with FIFA. It has hosted numerous incident-free international football tournaments, including the AFCON and FIFA Confederations Cup, the FIFA World Cup and major club events.
