Fayez al-Sarraj says GNA is determined to prevent dictatorship in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The President of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya, Fayez al-Sarraj, says his administration "will never allow the emergence of a dictatorship of any kind in Libya".

In an interview published Friday by the Italian newspaper, "La Repubblica", al-Sarraj called on the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) to support the government of national accord in achieving the vision of the reconstruction of Libya in as a "democratic country with an inclusive and transparent electoral system".

He pointed out that Turkish military support for the GNA came "to repulse the aggression" against the capital, recalling that "in December 2019, we made an official request to the United States of America, to the United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey and Algeria to activate the security agreements concluded since I took office."

He added: "We reserve the right to defend ourselves because the United Nations has taken no concrete measures to prevent the attack", welcoming Turkey with deep gratitude for taking concrete measures against aggression.

On April 4, 2019, Marshal Khalifa Haftar launched a military attack to take control of Tripoli and the western region and overthrow al-Sarraj's government, recognized by the international community. However, Haftar was defeated 15 months later and could not succeed in achieving his goal, thanks to the determination of the GNA and the support forces.

Mr al-Sarraj appreciated the "historic relations with Italy and Malta", declaring: "We appreciate the continuous cooperation in all areas of an economic nature, but also in a specific sector of maritime safety".

He also praised "the joint efforts to manage the immigration issue and help build the capacity of the Libyan coast guard", noting that "Libya will not forget the countries that have supported its people in the most difficult times."
