Fayez al-Sarraj hails role of Arab countries in search for solution to Libyan crisis

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – Libyan Presidential Council Chairman Fayez al-Sarraj has underlined the important role played by the League of Arab States and its organs to find a political resolution of the Libyan crisis.

He, however, denounced "the negative foreign, regional and international interventions which encourage certain factions not to participate in the democratic process."

In his speech at the 30th Summit of the League of Arab States (LAS) that ended on Sunday in Tunis, Tunisia, Mr al-Sarraj added that ‘’the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord continues its efforts to get Libya out of the current crisis’’.

"We held several meetings with all Libyan parties, we urge true national consensus and make all arrangements so that a solution to the crisis does not divide the power or exclude any as some pretend to be,’’ he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment ‘’to the principle of finding peaceful solutions that guarantee the building of a civilian state that does not reproduce a totalitarian regime or enables the militarisation of the state, which is a red line that we won’t accept’’.

‘’As a result, we are pleased to wait for the convening of April’s national inclusive conference backed by the United Nations, with hope to find consensus to get out of the current political deadlock, unify the institutions and hold presidential and parliamentary elections on a strong base.

‘’That path is undoubtedly a response to the aspirations of our people as for the building of a modern, civilian and democratic state’’, Mr. al-Sarraj said.

In addition, the Presidential Council chairman  expressed hope that "all factions involved in the Libyan crisis have learnt the lesson and are convinced that there is no military solution to the Libyan crisis, each military escalation results a situation where there is no winner but a loser which is Libya’’.

However, he said that in parallel to the political action, progress has been made for months now in the way to the economic reform and security, by launching two simultaneous programmes on the strong link between security and economy.

‘’The Government of National Accord sought solutions to the tough situation of Libyan citizens, by implementing economic reform programmes, meant to eradicate problems regarding the country’s monetary and economic situation’’, he said.

A programme was carried out to promote the economy and counter the drop of the Libyan dinar compared to other currencies, with the imposition of taxes on currency exchanges by 183%. This helped stop the fall of the dinar’s exchange rates, which is today equivalent, on the black market, to 1 dollar for 4.75 dinars, after it reached the exchange rate of 10 dinars over the past few years.

In the same wavelength, Mr al-Sarraj underlined that the security programme was continuing with the materialization of security arrangements in Tripoli and other Libyan cities.

‘’In this context, we call our brothers and sisters to back our efforts in that respect and to help us establish and strengthen the military and police institutions and their affiliated organs, in a bid to contribute to the efficient treatment of the situation in terms of security and stability’’, he explained.

He praised the efforts made by Arab countries which took part in meetings to find a political settlement of the Libyan crisis, saying that it is time to find an Arab consensus on the Libyan crisis.
