Famous American actress Bellamy Young arrives in Rwanda on girls empowerment campaign

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - Renowned American actress Bellamy Young arrived in Rwanda Thursday for a week’s visit to encourage more girls to fit into men-dominated spaces, a reliable source confirmed to PANA here.

"I am in Rwanda for the next few days to help women and girls learn new skills and improve their livelihoods," the American actress said in a message posted on her twitter handle.

According to her, the voices of love, community, inclusion and protection must outweigh the cowardly voices of hate.

Reports by Care International, an international NGO dealing with empowering women, indicate that girls in major parts across Sub-Saharan Africa have long been discriminated against by society and made to believe that they are inferior or less important than boys.

This is in spite of different government interventions put in place to address these practices.

Some organisations and stakeholders have come up with women empowerment programs that are geared towards helping young girls and women have a voice in the society and achieve their full potential.

Young became famous for her role as president Melody "Mellie" Grant in the ABC drama series Scandal (2012–2018).

She is the honorary chair for the domestic violence non-profit organization 'Helpmate' and has helped raise funds for victims of domestic violence across the globe.
