FUS Rabat upsets Sfaxien 3-2, lifts CAF Confederation Cup
Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - In one of the biggest upsets in African club football, FUS Rabat of Morocco beat host CS Sfaxien of
Tunisia 3-2 Saturday to win the 2010 CAF Confederation Cup.
Both teams had played goalless in the first leg in Rabat last week.
Despite its intimidating record as a two-time winner of the competition, CS Sfaxien could not ward off FUS Rabat, which showed little
respect for the Tunisians in winning its first-ever continental title.
According to details posted on its website by African soccer governing body, CAF, the visitors scored first in the 7th minute, when defender
Abdelfettah Boukhriss headed home.
Sfaxien, who have never lost a game at the ultimate stage of the competition since its inception in 2004, responded positively and equalised
a minute before half time as defender Hamdi Rouid drew the hosts level.
It was CS Sfaxien that shot into the lead five minutes into the second half through Zaiem from the spot.
But the Moroccans were undaunted, and striker Rachid Rokki punished the Sfaxien rearguard for failing to clear their lines to make it 2-2 on
75 minutes.
The equaliser placed FUS Rabat in pole position only for Mohamed Zouidi to seal victory by clinching the winner a minute from time, when he
slotted the ball past onrushing Sfaxien goalkeeper.
FUS Rabat now joins city rival FAR Rabat as the only Moroccan winners of the competition.
The Moroccoans will receive US$660,000 and the right to face Orange CAF Champions League winner TP Mazembe in next year's Orange CAF
Super Cup.
On its part, Sfaxien received US$462,000 for emerging runner-up.
