Ethiopian conflict: New convoy with humanitarian items on the way to Tigray

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The Ethiopian government says 74 trucks carrying humanitarian items are on the way to Mekelle, regional capital of Tigray state.

The National Disaster Risk Management Commission said the trucks, which departed from Samara on Saturday, are loaded with over 2,423 metric tons of humanitarian relief items and six fuel tankers.

The Ethiopian News Agency quoted the Government Communication Service as saying that the federal government is facilitating humanitarian access to citizens under difficult situations in keeping with the promise it made.

It also urged the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) to withdraw from the areas it occupied in Amhara and Afar regions in order to facilitate humanitarian activities.

The government also called on the international community to pressurise the TPLF to return the 1,025 heavy trucks that entered Tigray with humanitarian aid.

Last week, the Ethiopian government sent 50 trucks of life-saving humanitarian food, health, nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene items as well as fuel to Tigray.

This follows the humanitarian truce declared by Addis Ababa to cater for the needs of the people of Tigray.

The government also said that the federal government was also facilitating daily air transportation to the region for the delivery of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and nutritional supplements.
