Ethiopian Crisis: Guterres warns that Tigray on 'brink of famine'

New York, US (PANA) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that several areas in Tigray are "on the brink of famine".

In a tweet he said: "The situation will only keep getting worse unless need funding is increased and humanitarian access is improved. The actions we take now may mean the difference between life and death for many people."

The United Nations and some of its agencies, humanitarian and civil society organisations have continued to raise the red flags about the deteriorating humanitarian, food and security situation in Tigray and called for action to avert famine on a large scale.

Fighting began in Tigray on 4 November last year between national Government forces and regional government loyal to the former national ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

Some parts of the war-torn region have remained accessible  but overall, “grave” needs are outstripping capacity, with most rural areas “cut from communications and electricity”, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
