Embassy Issues alert to US gov’t staff ahead of protest in Monrovia
Monrovia, Liberia (PANA) – The United States Embassy near Monrovia has issued an alert to employees of the American government to take precaution and avoid being caught up in a planned demonstration in Monrovia on June 7.
A statement from the US Embassy in the media advised U.S. government personnel to avoid the area of the protest, as well as undertake rescheduling of flights in or out of Roberts International Airport on June 7 and 8, as traffic jams may affect travel to and from the airport.
It said a demonstration is expected to take place on Friday, beginning in the morning, staged by a group known as The Council of Patriot.
The group comprises mainly opposition political parties and says the June 7 protest seeks to present a petition “to draw government’s attention to some concerns in the governance of the State” by the George Weah-led administration.
The Embassy, among other things, informed its US government staff that while avoiding the areas of the demonstration, they must as well exercise caution if unexpectedly they find themselves in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
It advised the personnel to monitor local media for updates on the day of the demonstration as well as maintain a low profile.
