Egyptian parliament approves CAF Cairo Headquarters Agreement

Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - The CAF Headquarters Agreement received the approval of the Egyptian House of Representatives at its session on Monday, 8 June, 2020, in Cairo, as the agreement completes the final legislative procedure before going into effect.

The agreement recognizes the international legal status of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as an international Non-Governmental Organization. It is for a period of 10 years and shall be automatically renewed.

Chaired by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Ali Abdel Aal, the session approved Presidential decision No. 149 for the year 2020, regarding the CAF Headquarters Agreement, signed between CAF and the Arab Republic of Egypt on 12 February, 2020.

Earlier, the House of Representatives discussed the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee of the Youth and Sports Committee and the Committees of African Affairs, Defense and National Security Committee before submitting to the plenary session for approval.

Reacting to the deal, CAF President Ahmad Ahmad, said: “Today is a great day for African football. Finally, we have come to the end of a long journey that will shape the future of African football. Egypt has always been home to CAF and we are proud to formalize another extension of the Headquarters Agreement.

“Personally, I express my gratitude to the Egyptian Authorities led by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for the commitment towards making the agreement a reality."

Under this agreement, CAF shall benefit from several advantages and privileges similar to those granted to international organizations and diplomatic missions.

Composed of 24 articles, the agreement seeks to facilitates CAF’s mission to develop, promote and improve the popularity of football in the African continent in accordance with the CAF statutes
