Egyptian army eliminates 118 terrorists in Sinai Peninsula

Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - The Egyptian Army on Friday night eliminated 118 "extremists" in the Sinai peninsula, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the army staff.

Operations in that part of the country also resulted in the death and injury of an officer and 9 soldiers during clashes with armed terrorists and the search for hideouts of terrorists.

According to the statement, 33 "terrorist" shelters and 115 SUV vehicles used by "terrorist elements" were destroyed, while 273 bombs and 11 tunnels were put out of use during the operation.

Also, border guards seized weapons,  automatic rifles, machine guns, ammunition and a large quantity of drugs.

The Egyptian armed forces have since 2011 carried out "vigorous" operations against a terrorist group named as Ansar Beit Maqdas in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

These operations resulted in hundreds of civilian and security guards casualties before the birth of another Daesh-affiliated group called Wilaya Sinai that carried out actions both in northern Sinai and outside, the bloodiest of which was the attack on Rawdha mosque that killed 300 worshipers in 2017.
