EU urges Libyan warring parties to abide by call for truce on Eid Al-Adha
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The head of the European Union (EU) delegation in Libya, Alan Bugeja, has called on the warring parties in Libya to comply with the call for a truce on the occasion of the 'Eid Al-Adha by the UN envoy in Libya, Ghassan Salamé.
In a statement issued on Friday, Bugeja said: "I appeal sincerely to the parties engaged in the senseless war in Tripoli to adhere to the truce.
Justifying the truce, the European diplomat added that "this not only provides an essential respite for those most affected, but also as a first step towards the end of violence and the return to a political process."
"On Sunday, the people of Libya celebrates the beginning of Eid al-Adha, a time for prayer, reflection, solidarity with the needy and reconciliation, and I send them my best wishes for a peaceful holiday. My thoughts go to the bereaved, wounded, tortured and abused, arbitrarily abducted and detained, displaced persons, persons deprived of their rights and all Libyan citizens who have been severely affected by the instability and conflict of these past years, "added the head of the EU Mission in Libya.
He congratulated the Libyans on the occasion of Eid al-Adha and reiterated his appeal to the warring parties to adhere to the truce that the Special Representative, Mr. Salamé, is trying to obtain in the spirit of this holy period.
The UN envoy in Libya proposed a truce in Libya on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha when he briefed the Security Council as part of a plan to end the crisis.
On Thursday evening, UNSMIL asked the belligerents for a written commitment to observe a truce on Sunday, August 11.
