EU expresses concern on Guinea Bissau's post-electoral crisis

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) – The European Union (EU) on Thursday issued a cautionary statement on the political situation in Guinea-Bissau following the country’s presidential elections which took place in on 24 November and 29 December 2019.

Noting that the process has yet to be finalised, the statement made by the High Representative on behalf of the EU said all sides involved in the process “should respect the legal and constitutional framework to resolve the post electoral crisis”.

It stated that the parties should give priority to dialogue and refrain from any unilateral action that could further exacerbate tensions.

“In this regard, it is important that Guinea-Bissau’s defence and security forces do not interfere in the process and that ECOWAS Mission in Guinea Bissau, ECOMIB, ensures the security of state institutions and organs.

“The European Union supports ECOWAS’ mediation role and its efforts to consult with the Supreme Court of Justice and the National Electoral Commission. The EU would furthermore strongly welcome an ECOWAS high-level political mission to Bissau to help speed up efforts to resolve the post electoral crisis,” the statement concluded.
