ECOWAS urges Guinea to reopen its borders with Guinea-Bissau and Senegal

Conakry, Guinea (PANA) - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday urged the Guinean government to open discussions with Guinea-Bissau and Senegal on reopening of its borders with the two countries.

A official statement said a high-powered ECOWAS delegation, led by the President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Brou, held talks with the Guinean Head of State, Alpha Condé, the Prime Minister, Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Amadou Damaro Camara.

During the exchanges, the statement added, particular emphasis was placed on the closure of borders between Guinea and its two neighbours.

Mr. Brou and his delegation congratulated the government for agreeing to reopen the borders with Sierra Leone.

The reopening of the borders between Guinea and Sierra Leone,  came at the end of a recent visit by Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio to Conakry.

Guinea unilaterally closed its borders with its three neighbours last September, on the eve of the presidential election, citing security concerns.
