ECOWAS lifts sanctions against Mali

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has lifted the sanctions it imposed on Mali since the coup d'état that took place on 18 August 2020 against President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The sub-regional organization, however, called on the new Malian authorities to quickly release officials detained by the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (NCSP), the junta that seized power, and dissolve the committee.

The junta, in accordance with ECOWAS recommendations, has put in place a transitional president, a prime minister, and a government.

The sanctions included the closure of the borders of member states of the sub regional organization to Mali; the suspension of financial and commercial transactions with Mali, among others.
