ECOWAS congratulates Senegalese president-elect Faye

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has congratulated Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his election as President of Senegal.

In a letter to the president-elect quoted by the Senegalese Press Agency (APS) on Tuesday, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, wrote: "On behalf of the ECOWAS institutions, I have the honour to express to you my sincere congratulations on your election to the high office of President of the Republic of Senegal."

He also praised the posture of the Senegalese people and republican institutions and the serenity and maturity in which the presidential election took place, which has been deemed free, transparent and peaceful.

"In light of your various declarations, I am convinced that you will be able to promote reconciliation and inclusion and that you will be the president of the entire Senegalese nation, including those who belong to different political groups," Dr. Touray said.

Faye, swept to a resounding first round victory over former Prime minister and candidate of the ruling coalition, Amadou Ba in last Sunday's election.

The Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA) has yet to release the official results.

However, President Macky Sall, Mr. Ba and other presidential candidates have congratulated him for the first round victory.

ECOWAS deployed 130 Long-term and Short-term observers led by Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Nigeria's former Foreign Minister and United Nations Under-Secretary General, to monitor the electoral processes. They were joined by Short-Term observers.
