ECOWAS condemns massacre of 79 civilians in Burkina Faso's Sahel

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - In a statement, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has condemned the latest terrorist attack which left 79 civilians dead in the Seytenga Commune, in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso.

"This massacre comes a few days after the attack on the Gendarmerie Territorial Brigade of the said Commune, which left more than a dozen gendarmes dead," ECOWAS said.

Under these painful circumstances, the President of the ECOWAS Commission presents his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

The ECOWAS Commission President "strongly condemns these barbaric attacks and expresses his compassion and solidarity to the Transitional Government and the people of Burkina Faso," the statement said.

A 72-hour national mourning period has been declared by the Burkinabe authorities.
