ECOWAS condemns Guinea coup, demands swift return to constitutional rule

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned Sunday’s coup in Guinea and demanded swift return to constitutional rule.

The bloc has also ordered the immediate and unconditional release of President Alpha Conde and all other persons arrested by soldiers calling themselves the National Committee for Reconciliation and Development, the state-owned Ghana News Agency (GNA) reported.

“ECOWAS reaffirms its objection to any unconstitutional political change,” said a statement issued in Accra by Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana.

“We ask the Guinean defence and security forces to remain in a constitutional posture, and express our solidarity with the Guinean people and their Government,” the statement said.

The soldiers led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya, a former legionnaire of the French army, claimed they had toppled President Conde and arrested him.

The coup makers said the Constitution, the government, the republican institutions have been dissolved and the borders would remain closed for a week.

President Condé, 83, elected in 2010 for a first term of five years. Hewas re-elected for a controversial third term last year.
