ECOWAS Parliament has no resolution on Togo crisis, says Speaker

Lome, Togo (PANA) - The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Moustapha Cisse Lô, has denied rumours that the sub-regional parliament will pass a resolution on the political crisis in Togo.

"No resolution ... has been taken or is being prepared on the political tensions in Togo," Moustapha Cisse Lô said in a statement broadcast on Thursday by Togolese television.

He said that the ECOWAS Parliament is in regular session and it receives reports on each country including Togo.

According to Mr Lô, the ECOWAS Parliament is not responsible for the untruths that resolutions have been passed in favour of the postponement of the 20 December elections in Togo.

He, however, invited the political actors to sit down for a dialogue to get the country out of the crisis.

Since the beginning of this week, the Togolese capital, Lome, has been awash with rumours that the ECOWAS Parliament, in session in Abuja, was preparing a resolution on Togo to halt the electoral process.

The opposition is boycotting the legislative elections on 20 December. Instead, it is calling for institutional and constitutional reforms before any vote.

Protests held last week and last Monday claimed four lives, according to official figures.
