ECOWAS Mediator ends second round of talks in Guinea

Conakry, Guinea (PANA) - The Mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the Guinea crisis, former Benin President Thomas Boni Yayi, on Saturday ended his second round of talks with the country's junta to agree on an acceptable timetable for a return to constitutional rule.

Former President Yayi, who arrived in Conakry on 20 August, met with the transition authorities and socio-political actors with a view to facilitating an inclusive dialogue to promote a return to constitutional order, according to officials of ECOWAS.

"During these consultations, the Mediator reiterated ECOWAS' solidarity with Guinea and its firm commitment to accompany it for the rapid resolution of the crisis through a consensual agreement between all stakeholders to ensure a rapid return to constitutional order, in accordance with the provisions of ECOWAS," an official statement said.

During his stay, the Mediator also met with religious leaders, the Wise Men of the four regional coordinations, political party coalitions and civil society organisations.

Former President Yayi welcomed the establishment by the transition authorities of an inclusive consultation framework and urged the stakeholders to find compromises to make the dialogue inclusive and consensual.

He urged the political parties that have not yet taken part in the consultation framework initiated by the authorities, which could be updated in a consensual manner, to do so in order to ensure a peaceful transition.

The former Benin President reaffirmed the willingness of ECOWAS and the international community to support Guinea in its return to constitutional order so that it can fulfil the aspirations of its people for peace, stability, good governance and sustainable development.

The statement said the various parties involved in the discussions affirmed their willingness to continue discussions in order to agree on a timetable and content of the transition accepted by all.

Guinea has been suspended from ECOWAS since the 5 September 2021 coup led by Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya.

ECOWAS leaders had given former President Yayi and the Guinean junta until the end of July to agree an acceptable transition period or sanctions would be applied.
