ECOWAS, AU send observers to Togo for parliamentary elections
Lomé, Togo (PANA) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have sent observers to Togo for the parliamentary elections due on Thursday.
In a news conference, the two institutions reaffirmed their mandate which is to observe the parliamentary elections honestly and objectively. The opposition is boycotting the vote, asking for electoral reforms before any election.
The 50-member ECOWAS observation mission is led by former Nigerien transitional president, Salou Djibo. The 30-member AU team is led by the former DR Congo Prime Minister, Matata Ponyon Mapon.
The opposition has been asking the general public to stop the election from taking place. Opposition supporters have clashed with security forces with 4 people being killed during protests on 8 and 10 December.
Since then, security has been tightened in the country, particularly in the capital Lomé, Sokode and Bafilo, in the centre, as well as in Mango (Grand Nord), Kpalimé and Anié (Plateaux), which are seen as epicenters of the protests.
