Dozens of senior army officers arrested after failed coup attempt in Sudan

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Authorities in Sudan have arrested dozens of senior army officers after an attempted coup failed on Tuesday, but the search is underway to nab more suspects and secure the military positions.

An army spokesman said authorities have arrested over 20 senior army officers as well as other military of different ranks who were directly linked to the foiled coup attempt and that action was still going on to arrested the reminders

Brig. Gen. Al-Taher Abu Haja, media advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, said in a video broadcast by the Republican Palace website on the thwarting of the coup attempt that “twenty one officers have been arrested along with other ranks in connection with the coup attempt.”

“We have arrested and are in control of most of the elements involved in the attempted coup, 21 senior officers and other ranks and most positions controlled by the coup leaders are now under control.”

However, life in the national capital, Khartoum, the heart of the coup attempt goes on normally, traffic was uninterrupted and people carried on with normal activities, particularly as no shot was fired at least in the business district.

Abu Haja gave no clue about the political affiliation of those arrested. He made no mention of civilians if they were at all involved.
