Diplomatic process for Libya ceasefire still in the works, says Italian FM

Rome, Italy (PANA) - Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Milanesi, said "the diplomatic process - not just Italy's - is still under control" with regards to a ceasefire in Libya.

In a Wednesday interview with a local radio station, the head of Italian diplomacy said that "the diplomatic process is the only way to find a solution when fighting is going on in the field. We must be mobilized in favor of a diplomatic solution and that is what we do in our meetings".

"The fighting is between Libyans and we hope that these clashes will end and that the actors put an end to the military solution and return to the political solution," he said.

"We know very well through history that it is possible to win battles and wars, but it is not easy to achieve peace after victory," he said.

Tripoli and its suburbs are facing armed fighting since the announcement by Marshal Khalifa Haftar on April 4, of an attack on the western region of the country and the capital where the government of national unity, led by Fayez Al-Sarraj and recognized by the international community, is installed.

These clashes have blocked efforts of UN Special Envoy Ghassan Salamé to hold an inclusive national conference from April 14 to 16 to reach a consensus among Libyans on an agenda for elections and end the transition period in the country.
