DR Congo: About 40 killed in new carnage in Béni

Kinshasa, DR Congo (PANA) - About forty people were killed on Friday evening in three villages near the Virunga park, about 20 kilometres north-east of the city of Beni by suspected members of the rebel Ugandan Allied democratic forces (ADF), local sources said on Saturday.

The sources say the assailants wore the uniforms of the DR Congo armed forces (FARDC).

They had captured several villagers before executing some of those living there with machetes and axes.

Sources closed to the military said troops have deployed there and that the assailants have run away for now, taking domestic animals with them.

The massacre of civilians was the fifth of its kind by the ADF. The four previous attacks had left 84 dead.

The Ugandan rebellion is very active in the region and has been operating for about twenty years.
