Cyril Ramaphosa underlines need for solution in Libya without foreign interference

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, current chairman of the African Union (AU), Tuesday underlined the need to give Libyans the opportunity to reach a Libyan solution to the ongoing crisis without foreign interference during the Forum for the Libyan political dialogue to be hosted in Tunisia on 9 November.

In an interview on the phone with the chairman of the presidential council of the Libyan Government of National Accord, Fayez Al-Sarraj, President Ramaphosa criticized “the foreign interference in Libyan affairs and the affairs of the African continent in general, which contributed to fuel the conflict and trigger proxy wars".

A statement issued by the press office of the Libyan presidential council said the two presidents discussed the results expected from the meetings of the political dialogue commission to be held in Tunis on 9 November.

The chairman of the presidential council explained "the efforts made to ensure security and stability in Libya through the paths of solutions adopted by the Berlin Conference".

The South African president and AU chairman reaffirmed "the support of his country and the continental organisation for the choice of the Libyan people".

He welcomed "the ceasefire deal that paved the way for the peace talks".

The permanent ceasefire deal, signed by the delegations of senior officers from the regular army at the rate of five representatives of the Government of National Accord and five for the Libyan National Army commanded by Marshall Khalifa Haftar, on 23 October in Geneva, under the aegis of the United-Nations, stipulates the withdrawal of armed forces and groups from frontlines and the departure of mercenaries and foreign combatants in a deadline of three months.
