Coronavirus: President Barrow to participate in ECOWAS Leaders’ video conference on Covid-19
Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - President Adama Barrow of Gambia will participate in a video conference of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit on Thursday, the State House Banjul announce on Wednesday.
The conference will be chaired by the President of the Republic of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, who doubles as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
At the Summit, the Heads of State will address the situation and the impact of the pandemic (COVID-19) in the ECOWAS region.
Before this extraordinary summit, the Finance Ministers and the Governors of the Central Banks of the Region held an Extraordinary Session on April 21, 2020, on the situation of COVID-19, ECOWAS said in a statement obtained by PANA on Wednesday.
In order to deal with the situation of COVID-19 in the region, ECOWAS immediately provided financial support, in addition to the assistance received from international partners, for the acquisition of material and medical equipment for the fight against the pandemic, the statement said.
On 20 April 2020, according to data from the West African Health Organization (OAS), the 15 Member States recorded 5,474 confirmed cases, 1,567 recovered, 140 deaths and 3,767 active cases.
ECOWAS reaffirms its solidarity with the Member States and welcomes all the measures already taken to contain the spread of the pandemic and care of the patients.
