Coronavirus: Libya's heads AU Bureau and Regional Economic Group meeting on pandemic

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya, in its capacity as current chair of the Arab Maghreb Union, Saturday led a virtual meeting of the African Union (AU) Bureau and heads of regional economic groups of the continent devoted to the assessment of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Libya was invited by the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, current Chairperson of the African Union.

The Director of the Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation attended the meeting held via videoconference, according to a statement from the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting addressed the epidemiological situation and the latest developments in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic on the African continent, health requirements and recommendations for holding summit meetings during the period of the pandemic.

It also discussed the continued preparations for the African Union-European Union partnership summits to be held in February, the review of the draft agendas for the sessions of the Permanent Representatives Committee, the Executive Council, the African Union Summit and the Sixth African Union-European Union Summit, as well as the assessment of the political situation for peace and security on the African continent.

The participants agreed to provide urgent solutions to all political and security crises on the African continent, to eliminate the phenomenon of terrorism, particularly active in the Sahel region, to adopt a unified African position towards external interference in the internal affairs of African countries, and to reject and denounce unconstitutional changes on the continent.

They also emphasized the need to convene an Executive Council session to be held on 2-3 February and a Summit to be held on 5-6 February.

The study of documents of the African Union-EU Summit, review and evaluation of what has been achieved, and the advancement of this strategic partnership were among recommendations made at the meeting.
