Coronavirus: AU grants 45,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Togo

Lomé, Togo (PANA) - The African Union (AU) on Sunday delivered to Togo a batch of 45,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to support the country in its response against the coronavirus pandemic, official sources told PANA on  Monday.

The batch received by Togolese Minister of Health, Prof. Mustafa Mijiyawa, is intended  to support the country to face the pandemic which is in full swing.

On March 7, Togo received 156,000 doses of the same vaccine as part of the Covax initiative, set up by the World Health Organization to help developing countries arm themselves against the Covid-19.

The first donation allowed Togo to start the vaccination campaign since March 11, but it faces controversy and resistance from the populations because of fears about the "side effects" of AstraZeneca.

The Covid-19 situation is worsening in Togo with increased infections since the end of December 2020.

As of March 21, Togo recorded 8,918 cases including 79 new infections, 7,225 cured patients, 1,589 cases still undergoing treatment and 104 deaths, including two on Sunday.
