Congolese Nobel Laureate Denis Mukwege wants sexual violence victims compensated

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) – On the initiative of Luxemburg's Grand Duchess, Maria Theresa, Congolese Denis Mukwege, Nobel peace Prize winner in 2018, is taking part in the two-day international conference that opened on Tuesday in Brussels on the fight against sexual violence against women, official sources told PANA on Wednesday.

More than 1,200 delegates from across the world are taking part in the proceedings. They include the Luxemburg Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, the UN High Commission for human rights, Mrs Michelle Bachelet (former Chile president), as well as the special representative of the UN Secretary general in charge of sexual violence against women, Pramia Patten.

Atr the event, Dr Mukwege appealed for the establishment of a global repairing fund to intervene every time the government cannot undertake reparation.

Dr Mukwege’s appeal is directed to the United States and other members of the international community.

Directeur of Panza hospital in north-Kivu for two decades, Dr Mukwege operated on 50,000 raped women, from infants to elder women, victims of Congolese armed gangs and those coming from abroad, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

Surveys carried out in DR Congo say that the majority of Congolese express the wish that Dr. Mukwege should be appointed Prime Minister of the government of president Felix Tshisekedi who, two months after his election, has not succeeded in forming a working government.

The rivalries between the different political parties are so intense that it is impossible to appoint a head of government, the political platforms backing Felix Tshisekedi are far from having the majority in Parliament.
