Charity organization helps UNHCR workers to assist refugees

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan, has welcomed an International Humanitarian Partnerships’ basecamp donation in remote locations of Sudan.

In a press release, the UN Refugee Agency expressed its appreciation to the International Humanitarian Partnership (IHP) for building and handing over tented accommodations and equipped offices to help aid workers delivering assistance in hard to reach areas while remaining near the assisted population.

Founded in 1994, IHP provides multi-national collaborative support to humanitarian operations and it specializes in supporting humanitarian work in far-flung regions of the world.

In response to the influx of tens of thousands of refugees from Ethiopia’s Tigray region to eastern Sudan, IHP members - Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Luxembourg and Norway, with support from the European Union (EU), built and donated to UNHCR tented basecamps in Gedaref, Kassala and Blue Nile states, the release said on Tuesday.

It noted that the construction of these posts, which serve also as coordination centers, started in November 2020 and was completed in early May 2021 – with the first handover back in February 2021.

“This critical support was greatly needed as our and partners’ staff often help refugees in areas with little infrastructure,” the release quoted Axel Bisschop, UNHCR Representative in Sudan, as saying.

“I am grateful for this timely contribution and highly appreciate IHP and its donor countries who made possible the realization of this project,” he added.

More than one million refugees live in Sudan; among them those who have recently arrived from Ethiopia.

UNHCR with the Sudanese Commissioner for Refugees (COR) and partners provide them with life-saving assistance, including shelter, food, water, health and protection.
